Is anyone cooler than David Bowie

OK – I’m not blogging during the summer…as I get a load of stuff cleared and then start with a new blog elsehwere in the autumn.

However, during this slightly quieter month – a question has been bugging us in the office. Is anyone cooler than David Bowie?

Any help with this gratefully received.

That’s an interesting twist – other contributions so far include Nick Cave..

    Fonzie.

Or, restricting the search to real people: Peter Cook? But then he’s dead, of course which is kind of uncool …

Peter Cook – obviously the death thing is a kind of barrier…but good call.
    Fonzie – now we’re talking..

Am not sure that David Bowie IS cool. He was pretty amazing at some point and I think he’s made enough great records to means he’s sort of untouchable in that dept. But still cool? Really?

I think Jack White is cool. Jonathan Ive who designed the iPod. He’s cool. There’s a Chilean/German electronic DJ/musician called Ricardo Villalobos who’s unbeliveably cool. Kanye West is cool. Of iif you want to stay on the Bowie tip, then surely Brian Eno is cooler.

    It’s a good debate though.

Didn’t Jack White lose his cool when he wrote a Coke jingle? And I’d argue Bowie lost his when caught with Mein Kampf at Stansted (or wherever it was).

If we’re allowing dead people I’d go all the way and venture Lord Byron – admittedly Bowie could compete on the bisexuality and puffy shirts, but the man was a poet and war hero goddammit.

If you’re going to insist on a pulse, Kanye’s nearer the mark for me.

    Keith Richards?

I’m told that Tim Burgess is a ridiculous suggestion so how about Johnny Cash? Or Neil Young

David Lynch of course. And BTW doesn’t anyone who actually READS Mein Kampf automatically get their own shelf in the Cool Cupboard? Or maybe he wasn’t reading it, just carrying it to look cool…

David Bowie has always been in and out of cool.
Currently he is definitely out, doing all these pointless collaborations (Scarlet J, some unknown bands).
But he’s been cool, in the 90′s he was cooler than any artists, then in 99 he fell from grace with Hours and the Mick Jagger look, he came back potent in 2001 with Heathen, but the Reality(Vegas style show) sent him out.

if anybody is cool right now, it’s David Sylvian, going solo for 25 years, virtually unknown, has one of the best songs catalogue in the music business, his short tours are superb and he keeps a low profile.

Bowie is cryogenically cool. He had phases though, for me 1973 was the deep freeze, then perhaps his Berlin period. Early David Jones stuff a bit dodgoir but not as much as my version of Life On Mars on Sing Star.

    Miles Davis

    of course!
